Smbatyan’s determination to engage with young people and win new audiences for classical music attracted international attention in 2019 when he conducted the WCIT World Orchestra in the first-ever music concert written live by Artificial Intelligence (AI).
The orchestra presented real-time music composed through AI, representing a combination of human talent, emotions, and machine learning power, marking a first in the history of technology.
Around 100 musicians from fifteen countries were assembled in a single orchestra led by Sergey Smbatyan, to play the AI real-time composed music at the opening ceremony of the event. The newly created music was composed of elements from Armenian medieval Sharakan chants and national anthems of the participating countries, resulting in an iconic new hymn of WCIT-2019.
Both the orchestra and the concert itself conveyed a powerful message to the world – they demonstrated new horizons for the future of art, science and engineering all working together. Smbatyan’s brainchild created symbiosis where art, culture, and technology met. The WCIT orchestra emphasized the importance of culture within the technology sphere and once again proved that music transforms boundaries and does not recognize nationality.
